Modern cats usually generate their own O2 and don't require a SMOG pump to supply it. However, I don't know how well such cats would operate behind a carbed engine. Moreover, modern cats likely are not certified to be legal for most 80's emission packages. Modern cats are designed to work with EFI and multiple O2 sensors.
