changing front springs want decent spring compressor

Looks like mine. Too bad they don't say where it's made, this is one of those tools you really want to be USA quality only.
 
Whatever way you chose, treat it like a live bomb. I use safety chains tied to the frame. I also do an adaptation of Shotgun's method, but I use the compressor tool instead of allthread. I only use the bottom fingers, the threaded ones, and tighten/loosen from above the upper control arm, through the shock hole.

I do this with a 4 ton floor jack and 6 ton jack stands to get the car up high enough to lower the control arms. I tried the rental spring compressor before and it kept slipping. I wasn't very comfortable with it. I know the "lower control arm" method isn't the safest either, but I have some sense of security with a safety chain attached.
