Charging ac in g body

Most of those are banned now too. In fact any R-12 advertised as a replacement is banned. The only one that is OK is Enviro-Safe. But they advertise it as an R-134a replacement. Formerly it was an R-12/ R-134 replacement years ago. I think it is propane based so some worry about it exploding. I figure if your engine compartment is on fire that bad, you have worse things to worry about. I have been using it for years as it is compatible with the OEM mineral oil our cars came with. No flushing needed. My Bonnewagon AC system is all of 45 years old, has only a used rebuilt compressor changed, and blows 30° below ambient. Not too shabby.

What gets me is, you can't evacuate a system on purpose into the atmosphere. But if your system slowly leaks all out and gets recharged every year, that is fine. I am 609 certified too, and no one could answer that for me.
Iirc There's a term called "permissable discharge" . Basically applies to connecting/disconnecting, accidents and slow leaks

I have 4 old vintage full cans of r12 on my shelf at my shop!, I'm gonna put some stop leak in the system with the vintage r12 and see what it does!!!!

I too used that Enviro-safe stuff for a bout 5 yrs seem to work fine, until i blew a hose. Then i converted everything to 134a including the pressure switch. Been fine since.

That's still rather funny to me. If there's no pic/video, it didn't happen sort of thing. If it was a dangerous environmental problem, then they would make everyone swap their system. I totally understand the ozone concerns and I'm not for destroying life, and I'm glad they are still working on "safe" refrigerants. But the "it's ok if it all leaks out of the system slowly, but don't just pull off that hose to actually fix the leak" thing that just never smelled right. Contradictions abound.

They also come up with a new refrigerant about every 20 years, almost like the patent runs out and they have to come up with a 'new' freon because the old one is not longer protected by a patent I mean miraculously turned bad for the environment....

It's also funny how the govt locks down refrigeration parts for the household market but you can buy anything you want for the automotive market.

It's almost like HVAC-R unions have successfully lobbied the EPA that you need special skills to service a household system but the same principles don't apply to mobile markets..... or they kinda do, but not really...,

I learned from Dad to just put 2 cans in and watch the low side pressures with a thermometer probe in the vent on a 80F+ degree day. Keep adding until it blows cold (40F) and you are probably fine.

My mom's old '89 Cierra had a leak. I got some sealer that came in a tube that connected inline with the filler hose and can. I added a single can of 'Freeze 12' replacement and it lasted about 20 years without failing. That car went to the junkyard still blowing cold.
