I think the highest HP 283 was the 283 HP 57 Chevy and that was with hi-comp pistons, solid cam, and mechanical fuel injection. Even a very mild 350 should pump out 300-325 hp in a more favorable street rpm and more liveable with lower comp (for todays pump gas) and smaller cam.
Now to the real-world of the 2 combos. I'm not sure what the torque rating of the 283 was but again, the 350 should put out at least 350 ft/lbs of torque on a mild build. The torque is what you feel on a street engine.
The 283's were great engines for their time, but their time is past. Even with forced induction, there's no replacement for displacement.
