Its kinda two topics in one but these are the problems I face today...I looked under my car and found my new mini starters teeth are getting kinda chewed up against my flexplate it doesn't ring or stay engaged but iwas wondering if jus needs another shim already got two shims in or if its normal for the teeth to get kinda beat up....everything is bran new on and in engine jus broke in cam yesterday....other question when I rev the engine up it backfires sometimes the car has no exhaust on it jus open headers does it jus need some back pressure or could it be something else???.....other than that new engine sounds great....

HI does your starter hit when it is in gear? or when u start to move it is realy bad . u need to cut off 1/8 of a inch off the end of the bendix

I don't know what a bendix is? And I havnt drivn the car yet because it has no pipes on it jus open headers and I have ahigh toque mini starteri think it kind of sucks bak into the starter when the key isn't being turned so I don't think it could hit is this what you were asking??? Did I put somthing on wrong

Disconnect battery and with a screwdriver move the starter drive gear towards the flywheel. You will need to drop the converter cover to see. Measure the engaged position with a wire gauge and see what the clearance is. Stock is .020". Too much or too little is bad for the teeth.

No paid 180 at baxter auto parts...its a powermaster performance mastertorque series starter I'm gonna take the shims out in the morning I think its to far away......what about the backfiring is this cuz of no pipes or do I have a valve to tight or somthing?

Sounds like the timing is too advanced at high rpm.

So I think this starter is shot.....had a problem and lost all my oil then car sat a few days with no oil....starter had trouble turning moter over at first due to no oil I think.....car started and ran fine but now when I try ta start it the starter thing shoots out engages flexplate but once teeth are interlocked starter just spins and wheel with teeth stays still.....is my starter shot now....is this a common problem with mini starters or starters in general ...... still under warranty but have no receipt..

Someone else has said this to me about useing no shims but when I put this one on wit no shims it sounded bad..I gota 350 sbc. 3970010 .....as of when everything was working fine I was still chewing the teeth off of my starter and off the flexplate so is the cause of this to little shims or to many I'm at 2 thin shims and one medium today took 1 thin shim out seemed fine almost started moter then went quit and jus spins while gear sits still......I have powermaster mastertorque series is this good stuff or garbage
