This appears to be the original grey headliner with no sagging. There are a few small spots and smudges.
When I restored my 95 VW Gti I removed it from the car, sprayed with soap, rinsed with a garden hose and let it air dry. I have a feeling this method would destroy the GM part.

Google "clean fabric headliner car". A lot of good information comes up. Report back please with your results.

I would not try the same method that you used on the VW, on this headliner. I agree with you, it will most likely damage/destroy the headliner. At this point, due to the age of the headliner, and the fact that its original, that any attempt to clean it may do more harm than good. If you are sure that you want to try to clean it, be very careful, and be prepared for problems. Good luck.

If it is the original headliner I would assume the foam backing is already deteriorated and probably any pressure or scrubbing would make it worse.
Installing new headliner material is not that expensive but it is time consuming you can get a couple yards of gray headliner on Ebay shipped for around $30 and a couple cans of a good headliner adhesive like 3M are less than $10 a can.
