From what i can gather, swapping in LS engines in a gbody that has the big AC box still in place, the #8 coil hits the box.

But is that the case if you swap in the 97-98 LS1 that has no coil bracket and from what i can see is closer to the valvecover with the #8 coil flipped horizontally placing it further foreward as well?

Or phrased differently:
Did you have any clearance issues between the #8 coil and AC box with the 97-98 engine placed in the original smallblock location?

Not all coils on the brackets sit in the same place, and those earlier perimeter valve cover heads are a pain to work with. You can set the engine in the car a little forward to help with clearance.

The early heads are not a desireable option, the electronics are even worse. You can try aftermarket valve covers or coil relocation kits, or just notch the AC box for room. I do believe that the Holley kit moves the engine forward an inch to avoid this problem.

1998 PCM's are slow operating, don't datalog as fast and can't handle some of the things that the newer ones can.

As far as coils hitting the box, get a heat only box if you want to go that route, tons of room...

Just use the Holley mounts / pan . Trim the last coil mount and remove the mounting boss from the valve cover. No issues

Even after notching my AC box I still had to move the coil up about 1/4". I just slotted the holes and nut and bolted it. There is now 1/8" clear which is plenty with solid motor mounts.
