Personally, I hate the hot air choke. Tougher to set right. I always convert mineto electric choke. Check
choke tension cold. You may need to adjust the pull off so it opens less or replace it all together.

thats crazy. hot air choke has always been so bolt up and go for me. electric choke is trying to replicate what hot air choke is doing with hot air choke is like the real thing

Lot of great advise on here. I just finished building my quadrajet last night from Cliffs book and kit. It is great. I also recommend using his parts if you need any. His kits and parts are made to withstand Ethanol. Also his kits come with more parts than these parts store kits. He goes in great detail how to set up a carb. He has a great quadrajet forum on his site to ask questions also or he will advise you by e-mail. I second converting to electric choke.

I would probably check the choke, same thing as everyone else said.

Again, they arent junk, I rebuilt a few with good results and put one from a 78 olds delta 403 on my stock 350 olds crate engine with popular bolt ons like an RPM intake, full tube headers, 2 1/2" duals and an accel distributor and posi 3.73s. With a basic rebuild and bronze bushings installed and at an almost stock factory calibration my cutlass having 3.73's and Posi would torch the tires. It ran better with that carb then my remanned qjet from holley at half the price.

Quadrajet = best street carb ever made period. Nothing 'junk' about them. They get their bad rep by those who screw them up and place the blame on the carb itself or by thinking a old, out of tune, desperatly in need of a rebuild carb should run perfect.

x2 I don't know how many time I have talked to people that said the QJet was junk, I just ask them if they have ever rebuilt/tuned one. Most of the time they have been told that the QJet was junk, and that they have never touched one.

And nothing moans like a Q-jet! Well almost nothing.

X2 on everything Double V wrote. Here is a link to a very good book on Q-Jets.

Along with Cliff's book add these two as well:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/1563920689/?tag=gbody-20

I have all 3. I can say I learned a lot about the Quadrajet from all of them. Doug's book does an excellent job of explaining how the computer controlled Q-jets work.
