I swapped a motor & factory gauges into my 81 Grand Prix. On the first run of the motor the coolant gauge was up over 220F. We burped the cooling system, then used an inline gauge to verify that the actual temperature was nowhere near that. The sender was the issue. So I bought two more sensors, and tested all three in boiling water. Results are in the attached PDF:
The original Standard Motor Products TS6 sender was way off.
A WVE 1T1053 sender was closer, but still a good ways off.
A Shnecke 33-26109-AA sender was very close. Schnecke wins.
All three of these are listed as correct for my motor, but they are obviously not the same. Test your new sender before use!
& before boil testing, I tested the gauge itself - grounded the sender lead & it swung all the way to the right, which indicates that it's working.
