as far as the cost between chevy and olds, a few hundread dollars to build an olds over a chevy isnt much considering u are already spending 2 to 3 thousand on a good performance engine, when oldsmobile guys come to your car and are proud you chose olds, the few hundread bucks are well worth it, every body puts a chevy in a olds, like putting a dodge engine in a chevy, doesnt make much sense

see i dissagree with that. Being from a generation where all BPCC motors are the same design no matter what make it is, i really dont care as long as the motor was built by a branch of gm. I feel that if your car could have possibly came with that engine, or that engine will bolt right up, it is perfectly fine. of course your talking to someone who has a 350sbc shoved in his regal lol

The Olds is a good engine, every bit as good as a chevy, Buick or Pontiac. I think Olds engine in an Olds car is cool, but these cars did come with SBC, so it is not near the same level as a Dodge engine in a chevy.

I see you are from SoDak too. Where you located at? I'm in Mitchell.

The engines aren't similar yes, but to say to GM people to put a chrysler engine in a chevy usually won't generate the best reaction. I researched this thoroughly before starting to piece together engine parts for my cutlass. You aren't just looking at cost but also availability and experience. Almost every engine shop knows how to perfectly bore and clearance a 350 small block, probably chevy BB also. It's not every day they come across an olds engine.

But in reality you aren't looking at a few hundred dollars more, you're looking at more like 500 to a thousand dollars more at least when starting from scratch (unless you get lucky or are an engine builder) - if you want more than 350/400 horses out of the engine.

It shouldn't matter what engine you bring to a machine shop, its all the same concept with boring and clearancing.

I have a hard time with that statement. As Dan said, the machining costs are the same. If you buy the same quality components (pistons, bearings, gaskets, etc) instead of the Chinesium parts, the build costs will be very close.

If you read what I wrote you would see it says machine shops see many more chevy engines and know them better, have worked more, and know exactly where to get which parts.

Not as I found. If you could send me a link to where you find SBO aluminum heads and stroker rotating assembly for less than a chevy or even in the same ball park with the same performance, I would say you're right.

I was going off of this comment, "Almost every engine shop knows how to perfectly bore and clearance a 350 small block, probably chevy BB also"

Also, all of the parts you need for a 350-400 h.p. build is available at Summit or Jegs. I would think the only part you would not be able to get at those two places would be a girdle, and thats not even required.
