are you talking about the crank timing gear?.....that just slides onto the crank...

and if you do need a tool alot of car part stores have a tool rental program
 
You can put the crank gear in the oven at a few hundred degrees and it should expand enough to slide over the crank especially if you let the crank get cold. Thats easy to cool in ohio !!!!
 
I would want the crank timing gear to be able to align itself with the cam timing gear so I want it to slide on ...
 
Thats why i said to put the gear in the oven :roll: . Put the crank in the freezer lol

Pontiacgp, I was asuming the OP was talking about chevy engines and the crank gear. Its a press fit with a keyway it keep it in the right spot.
