I have a 87 olds 442 with a 307. The 307 runs fine but just has no balls. I'm still in high school and don't have a ton of time to do a engine rebuild or build up. I'm thinking a crate engine is the answer. Got a 5000 dollor budget. Any opions on a crate engine and also how hard is it to drop an engine in?
 
Throw a set of headers and true-dual exhaust on the 307 and drive it til it dies. It'll wake it up quite a bit.

Put the rest of the money towards building a nice Olds 350, 403, or 455... :banana:
 
I already got headers no cats and true dual. Just want to know the best crate for 5 grand and how hard to do a swap on a 87 442
 
Well, if your thinking "Chevy" crate engine then your going to need new headers for starters.

And it won't be long after you drop the new engine in before the stock trans will start slipping. So now you'll have a hot engine with a car that doesn't go anywhere. 🙁

Personally, I wouldn't basterdize an original 442 with a crate engine. If you do, at the very least hang on to all of the parts your remove for the swap. This way it can be put back later on.
 
I recommend a crate 383 with warrantee.

I heard bad things about Blueprint engines. There's a post on here somewhere of a horror story, a badly made engine, bad customer service and basically a failure of Blueprint to help out the customer after selling a bad product. So stay away from there. If someone else remembers this, chime in please.

$4000 isn't really enough to get a crate motor carb-to-pan installed and drive away. You'll need to spend more, unless you get a basic locally rebuilt chevy 350. But I don't like that idea because anything could go wrong and you have yourself a horror story.

I like the brand name crate engine idea because they are more reliable. You're looking at between $5 - 10 Grand for a complete crate engine. Look at GM, Edelbrock, World Castings and there's a company on Ebay/Youtube that builds nice crate motors too called Nelson Racing Engines. Google them, see what's available, then call the guys you want to buy from.

If your budget is really $5000, then start by setting aside $1500 for all the ancillary stuff that a swap requires. Beefed up trans, new carb, new starter, new motor mounts, new accessory brackets, new hoses, new radiator, etc, etc. Or, spend $5000 on a 350 or 403 Olds and it's a bolt-in (yeah, you'll still need a beefed trans eventually).
 
As FE3X said, it would be a nice idea to save the original 442 parts so that it could be restored at a later date. With that said, it sounds like some of the original parts are already gone or at least removed.

What are your goals for the build? Is this just going to be a weekend driver or a track car?

I've see all sorts of places that will build a custom olds motor for you in short time. I've also seen a few built olds motors for sale from time to time online. As mentioned above, it's probably a good idea to get a reference from someone else before buying the Olds motor for a particular vendor. You could probably find a good +300 HP sbo for around $2500.

Personally, It would be cool to see an Olds "crate" motor installed in a 442 instead of the common sb chevy that you get with a happy meal.

You could purchase an HO 455 or HO 350 from here:

and use the accessories & tins from your old motor. You would need to buy a new intake, could probably get away with using the original CCC stuff with a simple prom upgrade. Or just upgrade the HEI and QJet to a mid 70's non CCC...
 
If you have 5g to spend on motor and what not, I would do a budget carbureted 5.3 swap. You can get the 5.3 pretty cheap from lkq. I would look for one with low miles if you don't want to freshen it up. I would at least do oil pump and oil pick up girdle. Get a z06 cam and some f body headers and you got some cheap, reliable power. You can get the complete swap kit for about 500 from brphotrods or piece together your own kit for much cheaper. You can also run this with your current transmission with the adapter and other parts needed or swap to the 4l60e or 80e. A stand alone controller runs about 500-700 on ebay.

Here is a 2011 5.3 for a great price and comes with accessories. If you go with the brp kit you dont have to notch or relocate anything. If you do decide to go carb with this setup instead of keeping the fuel injection you also offset some of the cost by selling the parts you dont need. Going fuel injection you will obviously have to upgrade and get other parts i.e. fuel system, gas pedal.....
