delay wiper conversion

It really is a shame that GM had to overcomplicate something like this. When we did my interior we made an attempt at delay wipers and it probably last about 2 days before calling it quits. It's just not worth it

What it is, is that everyone wants a tilt column (me included) and it seems to always be a later 80's unit they get. That's fine until they realise the wipers won't work on their early 80's car. I used the stock non-delay motor and bought the $25 non-delay switch too because I had to pass inspection right away and would deal with it later. That's when I found out how complicated it was. I lucked out and got an early type delay motor from a guy on this site but then I was shocked at the price of the needed switch. That's when I just scrounged up my old $8 JC Whitney delay box and wired it in. Works great because the green wire needs to be grounded for the wiper to rotate even one revolution. The delay box re-grounds the green wire intermittently and we have delay wipers. It is possible and even financially more prudent to adapt a later type wiper system as long as you already have the later column w/delay switch and you are up to rewiring the whole deal as 81cutlass did. The only big difference is that instead of the wiper motor being hot (white wire) the column switch is hot (white wire). If you compare the old and new wiring diagrams it becomes clear.

Yup same here. I bought a used column and was happy that it had a delay wiper switch. Then I saw what it required, and converted it over to the tradition high-low system.
