i was at the junk yard today and they had an older elcamino ss there (pretty much stripped) but the rearend was still in it. it has water all around it so i could hop under the car and check it out but did most of the super sports have posi rearends?

Honestly, it seems a majority of them didn't.
The stealerships preferred to load the cars up with options that could be seen on the lot, like a/c and power windows and locks and such... posi-traction wasn't usually one of them.
Posi was an option only, and never came as standard equipment.

not even the GN's came with a posi, stock.

I've got an 8-1/2" peg leg rear end, likely from a GN.

Yeah I bought my 1987 SS w/ choo choo customs package new in 1987, and it came with floor shifter, buckets and lots of power options, but none of the performance options that came on the Monte SS. It did have a posi rear end but it was a 2.41 with 200c 3 speed automatic and a LG4 305, very weak even compared to the L69 HO 305 in the Monte SS. if it is a posi it should have a small aluminum tag hanging off of one of the bolts holding on the rear end cover.
