I found a differential, that is said to be an open diff, but I didn't know the GN came in anything besides posi.

Did this diff actually come from a GN?

actually the posi was an option on the GN not standard. god only knows why so yes it very well may be a real GN rear

I believe it was an option on all but the 87 where it came standard.

very interesting post i was actually looking for a gn rear to put in my cutlass because i thought they were all posi? anyone know what marking to look for on the posi ones? without pulling the cover

if it is still in the original car it came in you can look at the rpo codes under the deck lid and it should be G80 for a posi

why would anyone even consider buying a rear end without removing the back cover and the axles out of it to see what condition it's in...

I suppose price could have something to do with it. I paid $200 for my 8.5 442 rear and figured if nothing else, the g-body housing was worth that. I'll take a peak inside before I install it though.

well, actually the '86 and the start of the '87 model year the G80 was an option on the WE2 grand National as well as the rest of the Regal production. Toward the end of the the year the WE2 Grand National became its own model that G80 was part of so then it was standard. It was a mid year change.

8.5 for $200 ..... hell you could totally go through that rear and still be ahead. Go for it! (or let me know where it is)
