Im wondering what is the difference between these two pumps? When did they begin to use the type 2?

The other thing question: I will be putting in a 1969 Pontiac 400 into my 79 GP and the engine will have an original 1969 PS pump. Since Im upgrading the steering box to a quick ratio (either from a Monte SS or a Jeep Cherokee), can I swap the high flow pressure valve from an 82-92 camaro into my 1969 pump?

thanks!

yes and you'd want to change the valve. The older valve used a flare fitting and the newer valves use an o ring so you would have an issue with the high pressure line fittings if you left the old valve in the pump. The type II pumps look nice and I was thinking about it but I'm not sure if I could fit one with my serpentine set up.

Thanks Pontiac. What are the benefits and downside of going with camaro box verse the monte SS box?

I ran an F body Z box, benefits are the box gives you a heavier feel. It's the same ratio as a SS box. Some people think it's a quicker box than the SS cause it has less travel stop to stop. The reason for less turns on the steering wheel is the stops in the box, make a larger u-turn radius which is the downside. Here is a pretty good write up about modifying the PS box...
