So, this friend of mine has this 2wd, 3.9, ext. cab, 2003 Dakota. A few months ago, the fuel pump went out, so I helped her Bf get that squared away, she drove it about a week and it developed the ever-dreaded, crank/no start problem. I keep reading about a stupid Auto Shut Down relay, but cannot locate anything labeled as such. Does it have a different name?

So far, almost the entire ignition system has been replaced: plugs wires, cap, rotor, coil, and crank sensor. I have a distributor pickup on order; that's the last new part to throw at it beside an ECM, but we're not doing that. I also verified that the fuel system still has 50psi. We get zero spark, but I can't tell if the ASD/ECM is preventing it from sending signal to the coil. Any help/ideas other than a rag in the fuel fill?

ASD can be jumped to test. Crank or cam sensor is usually the culprit for crank/no start with no associated codes.

Inspect the ASD Relay fuse located in the IPM. If the ASD Relay fuse is open, repair the cause of the open first before continuing. Inspect the ASD Relay Output circuit for a short to ground for the cause of the open fuse.NOTE: Diagnose P685 - Auto Shutdown Relay Control Circuit first if set along with this DTC.

With the DRBIII, erase the DTC.Attempt to start the engine. If the engine will not start, crank the engine for at least15 seconds. It may be necessary to repeat several times.Does the DTC reset? ALSO TRY JUMPING THE RELAY GROUND

I hope not. The only truly legitimate 'puter failure I've seen is a Frod GEM. Although, the BCM in my Rusterado took a schnit, but I think that was moisture related. Computers are generally the last resort.

I may be remembering wrong (it's been a while) but I thought ASD relay controls fuel pump too. Either way, I don't remember replacing any aside from late 80s early 90s LeBarons, Shadows, etc. On 3.9/5.9 I replaced a few hall effects (distributor pickups). There was also a TSB for coil wire rerouting to get it away from the exhaust manifold. Had more than a couple come in on a hook due to melted coil wire causing no-spark.
