I bought a new 1983 Hurst / Olds and drove for 10 years new. The door skin tore at the top behind the chrome molding in front of the mirror. I thought it was because I smoked and cracked the window while I drove.

However I picked up an 83 Hurst / Olds recently and it has the same tear on the drivers door as I had on my first one.

Is this a know issue and is there a fix?

Thanks, Jeff

yes it is a know problem.i see alot of them in my shop.
i havnt fixed one for some time but i do have to do mine on my 87 442.what i used to do is take the door off and tig weld the crack.then get up inside the door and plate the inside as far up as you can get..cant get all the way up..i use 3M panal bond and make a plate about 6 inches long and 4 inches wide...this helps strengthen that area from twisting when you open and close the door.it takes some time to mold the tin plate to comform to the door but i have had great success with doing this that way.just make sure you grind the area where you are going to put the plate in real good and get all primer and dirt off the inner door area were the patch is going....i let it set for a day then do the outside body work ...so far i have done 5 that way and they still held up to this day.

this repair helps stiffen the door in this area and help keep it from cracking out again....hope that helps you out
