Drove a stick for the first time today!

you know, as nerve-racking as that first experience was... I had a great time once I got going. And I loved driving big trucks after that time, jumped at every chance. And once you understand the the operations of a manual, you can drive any manual with no issues.

... well, that's not true... the big bear Muncies still give me a hard time. I seem to buck my buddy's M22. My chicken legs are no match for that bear of a clutch.

I was 16 years old and had just gotten my license ... my dad had a 1987 FORD 2wd F-150 300ci straight six and a 4-speed manual. I kept hounding him to teach me to drive it but he was hesitant because my older brother burned the clutch up in it a couple years earlier. So one day my mom and dad went somewhere and the truck was left at home, with the keys and me 8) So I'm like "alright, I'll just teach myself. It can't be that hard" hopped in it and started over to CHRIS.O house. I must have stalled that truck 50 that day, but we had fun

I think what helped me learn to drive a stick was riding a motorcycle with a clutch as a kid. Same principle, just that the hands and feet do the opposite thing. Learning how to slip the clutch without burning it up or stalling the car is the trick...and some people, although they learn to drive a stick, never really understand the real benefits offered by them, such as engine braking. I plan to install a 4-5speed in the Salon someday, when I can afford it.

Gotta love stick shift. 🙂 My first time was in my dad's pickup. It's a '90s Chevy step-side with a 5 liter/5 speed combo. One day he just pulled over to the side of the road, looked over, and said, "Okay, you're drivin'." I just looked at him like:  haha. I did alright for a newbie. Since then I've driven my friend's Mazdaspeed Protege and my other friends BMW 3-series. I can now say my 200-4R's days are numbered.
We've still got that truck and it now has an extended pistol grip shifter that comes up to the same height as the steering wheel. It's a blast to use. Unfortunately that truck doesn't start and I think the fuel pump on the gas tank went out. 🙁

Oh, let me just add that driving a stick on wet pavement or in snow IS A BLAST!!!! Just watch the winners of a Nascar race doing their burnouts to see what I mean!

let me warn you about trying out a G body with a stick, it'll cause you to hunt down the parts and convert your car to a stick so if you don't have the time or budget for a conversion don't test drive it...

No it won't in my case!.
If I want to drive stick I'll drive my Nissan or my fiances Peugeot. I want the car to take care of as many driving chores as it can.
If you learn to drive auto over here you can't legally drive stick until you have passed a test in a stick car.
A lot of men over here think driving an automatic car is equivalent to having one of their testicles removed  .

Automatics have a legitimate need in the US because 5/ton cars/trucks are not fun to drive with stick shifts. On the flip side, smaller, sportier cars are pretty lame without them.... I think Gbodys are good canidates for both......02

 I have a friend like that. He only refers to automatic as "autotragic."

What is funny about that is my first vehicle was an exact replica to your dads truck. I should get that old truck going. Still sits out at moms. I need to get it running use it here and there. I miss having a truck.

Have you tried driving a large truck with an auto? In my opinion I think most of them suck! Im not talking about a ford f350 or a 3500 silverado, im talking about semi trucks and larger dump trucks. Some are okay, but most can be annoying to drive. A lot of times you need to use manual mode since the computer doesn't know what gear you need to be in!
