I'm restoring my 83 cutlass and im just about up to the exhaust system. i have flowtech headers and borla mufflers with an x-pipe, and chrome tips. i was wondering which would be better, a classic rear exit, or having the pipes exit out behind the rear tires at an angle. i like the idea of exiting from behind the tires, but im not sure about it, does anyone have any pictures of their set-up?

I don't have pics of my exhaust, but when I got true dual exhaust on my '83 Cutlass Supreme, I had them exit just behind the rear wheels at an angle.
Just my opinion, but I don't like the look when they exit out back on G bodies. The gas tank and spare tire well force the tail pipes too far to the side of the car and make them highly visible from the side.
My two cents.

Olds and Buick put them coming out behind the rear wheels from the factory. I personally like that look a lot better than if they come out from under the bumper. That is what I am doing with my Cutlass. I only have one tail pipe installed so far, I might be able to get a pic depending on how buried under snow it it.

While I do prefer the look of rear exit, I still like to keep with GM's original idea - side exit for Buick/Olds, and rear for Chevy.

The spare tire well and gas tank is actually one reason I prefer rear exit, so that these two items are hidden from the side. The only thing is you have to keep your tailpipes looking nice if you go with rear exit.

If you prefer your tailpipes to not be seen, the definitely go with side exit, as you cannot tuck the pipes up with a rear exit setup.

Here's rear exit on my Monte (3" polished stainless) and my parent's Cutlass (2.5" stainless):

If your car is lowered, rear exit pipes will result in smashed tips once you find a nice steep driveway. I prefer the behind the tire exit, but the rear also looks nice on certain cars.

For some reason I can't get the pictures on CarDomain to become full size anymore...
Here's a 3" behind the tire pipe on my 442, not the best pic...

And here's a 3" slash cut tip on my old El Camino I used to have.

I kinda like the stock look. Rear exit on the SS and behind the rear tires on the rest
