Hello,
What I am trying to find out is whether I can install a 7.625 Eaton case with 3.42 gears and 28 spline axles into my 1983 Malibu wagon with the original 7.50 rear end with 2.41 gears no posi?
I again can get theses parts new for cheap.
Has anyone done this, The person who is selling the parts was told he would have to upgrade to the 28 spline axle for this Eaton Posi unit to work versus the original 26 spline axles.
Thanks to all who respond.
Mike

What is the axle spline count on the Eaton posi case? If it is 26 spline you can use your original axles, or if it's a 28 spline carrier then you can get 8.5 Gbody axles with 28 spline axles. We just redid a 7.625 axles with a 02 SS Zexel Torsen LSD and 442 8.5 axles.Only issue we had was the axle clips were too thick so we grinded them down a bit to make them work...

Thanks 85GPLef41, Yes the 28 spline axles are part of the deal which are new Moser axles in the box. The axles and the new Eaton LSD carrier come as a deal. Seems the retainer clips wil have to be customized to work. It.s a 3 series carrier so I am thinking of going with a nice streetable 3.42 gear. The Malibu wagon has a 350 crate motor with 77 corvette Q-jet and distributor along with dual exhaust. Daliy driver, thats all it is for now.
Thanks for the input, Mike

Glad i could help... 😀 just take your time grinding the c clips down... Don't need that much grinding to them... 😀 We ended up using the 3:73:1 gears of the stock Monte SS rear.

you can also use the support cover like what TA performance sells. if you have a 200-4r you can even take advantage of a better gear like a 4.10 to 3.73. if you're stuck with an old 3 speed I would use a 3.23 gear unless you're using a tall tire & lock up converter.
