I'm doing the same thing this week with 3.23 gears from Motive that I got off Amazon for $124 in july. Seems they are $200 now. Waiting on a 2-jaw puller for the carrier bearings; I learned last night that the bearing splitter isn't going to work.

This is a rebuild of 1984 unit that was 'professionally rebuilt' - converted from open 2.29 to posi 3.55 in 2021. Tore it down and cleaned it this weekend found all the original shims in it, coast side of the ring is burned. The unit whined on coast from day one. From what I've read, being able to put a new carrier in with the original shims is like winning the mega millions - unlikely. I had to strap the axle tubes to the feet of the cherry picker to jack the carrier out of the case.

I also have an 8.5 sitting in the basement but I lack the funds to buy the carrier and axles that would make it worth rebuilding. I usually don't have any money this time of year, but I can't stand not having a project going. Always need to be doing something. We'll do concurrent rebuilds here. I have a nice aluminum cover with jack screws for the main caps - hoping to sell this for $700 on the FB marketplace. With 26 spline it's not really worth that money but the parts sure cost that much, although I had everything on hand except the bearings.

I’ve heard and read .008-.010 preload on the carrier bearings and I’ve never done that. Also, I’ve never damaged a gear or bearing at .004-.005”. But I should mention that I don’t have 100,000 miles on anything I’ve put together either.

If it works for you, then you ought to stick with what you’re doing. I think setting up rear ends has a lot of leeway to what works and what doesn’t.

thanks nailhead is that for new bearings ? i will be using new timkin bearings my first time doing this setting up ring and pinion i always considered black magic i got the time and want to learn it

doood nice stand you built for that rear and that cover sure will look pretty what did you use to clean out the rear ?

Late last summer I pickled the outside with phosphoric acid, wire brushed and pressure washed then sprayed whatever flat black I had. I used a can of brake clean and half a dozen rags to clean inside. Used some alcohol also. Getting these races off the carrier took me 3 hours. The Amazon puller was worthless (hooks galled); the harbor freight 2 arm puller was hard to keep centered and only when I cut the cages off and torched the race did they eventually give way. Father-in-law gave an extra set of hands.

New or old. I’ve always set the
Carrier preload up the same. Used gears I try to give a couple of extra thousands on the backlash.

I’ve never been able to get them with out either a bearing separator or a torch. They suck to remove.
