I usually like things that don't borg down on me.... I really don't want to be assimilated...

If you are not using an ECM, you will need to get a non-computer controlled distributor also. To bypass it the simplest way is to disconnect the ECM. If you want to do a better job, the whole ECM harness is one piece, and it runs down throught the passenger side of the firewall.

The Borg were a cybernetic species on Star Trek The Next Generation.

ok That makes sense. If i unplug it it wont mess up with any thing else. If i unplug the computer can i use the distributer on there now. thanks again

The ECM is located in the kick panel on the passenger's side. If you want to keep the computer HEI distributor, you will need to retain the MAP sensor so that the computer can get a load reference. If you wish to change the distributor to a non computer variant, you can go without the ECU.

The ECU harness can be left in place if you do not wish to use it. If you want to remove it, you will need to remove the inner fender on the passenger's side as it is below the HVAC suitcase. It runs nothing but computer functions, and is a piggyback harness to the non computer harness. The power wire to the HEI is on the main engine harness, not the computer harness, so removing the computer harness affects nothing else.

If you unplug the computer, there is nothing to advance the ignition, so you need to swap to a HEI vacuum advance and set it up for your power curve. Also, make sure that 600 is setup properly for your 305 and is opening correctly.

You should also rig up a switch for your torque converter.

I think the computer also turned off the A/C on the 86 and 87 at full throttle, so you will need to find the relay it uses to switch it on and off and bypass it.

Other then that you are good to go. Note that the computer needs the minimal to work: Distributor reference points, TPS, MAP sensor, and O2 sensor. Everything else is optional. To allow it to lock up the torque converter it needs the vehicle speed sensor.
