Howdy all, new to the forum as you can see. Bought an '83 Hurst Olds in December from an older lady for a price I couldn't refuse... present to myself you could say. This is actually my second G body my first was a black '78 Regal back in high school forever ago, this one's kind of a homage to that one I guess. Very nice older lady had this one sitting dead under a tree for a while and allowed me to rescue it. The price she wanted was ridiculously low, I offered her more and she refused (seriously), so I paid her price and flat-bedded it back to my house.
Charged the battery, added some new gas, sprayed some starter fluid down the carb, and viola she was running. I haven't tagged or insured it so I don't know how it drives yet but it seems to run and shift well. She said the transmission had been rebuilt shortly before parking and it does seem to pop well into drive and reverse.
Here's the worst part: the car has about a thousand sap drops on it and the former owner brushed house paint on all the horizontal surfaces. Thick. I'm not exactly sure why, I believe she thought she was protecting the sheetmetal from the sap, but there's as much sap encased in paint as is on top of the paint. Sap that dribbled onto the sides was dabbed with paint to cover the sap. The paint still showing on the trunklid is extremely oxydized so maybe she thought that was rust and was protecting the metal from that. As I attempt to remedy this (I've already sanded down the hood after totally screwing up whatever good original paint may have been left under the house paint) I'm tempted to be angry but I cannot get mad at her for doing this because SHE SOLD ME THE CAR FOR A SONG. It's a catch 22, anger-price-anger-price-insanity. Of course, a $9.99 tarp would have prevented all this, but... sigh... anyway. I dunno.
The center lightning rod shifter is snapped at the base, if I can't find a way to weld that my research shows that's gonna be an expensive fix, assuming I can even find the part. Power antenna seized up. Interior needs some cosmetic work, especially the headliner. I replaced the water pump, which was leaking. I included a picture showing what I thought of that ordeal.
Any insight as to how to deal with that house paint would be appreciated. Thanks!
