If that's what the guy wants, let him have it. The discussion of whether his lifestyle could be used as a categorical imperative for us all is a different one altogether. As someone who would go "off grid" if I could, I have to give him credit. Plus, the $30k investment in off grid electrical power (if used for other things) can and will pay for itself in time. After all, he will not see an electrical rate increase until it is time to repair or replace his generating equipment. An I a greenie nut job? No, but I like the thought of being able to tell the electrical utility that just did a 20% rate increase this year to screw off. I feel that as the cost of off grid power generation comes down, that more people will start opting out of the public utility system, either by being completely off grid or grid parallel, irrespective of their views on the environment. After all, environmentally sound technologies only see mass adaptation when they become economically more viable than old technologies.
