How old do your cars have to be before they are emissions exempt? I notice a lot of you talking about emissions equipment. I figured these cars were getting old enough that the smog police would leave them alone. I live in South Dakota and wehave no checks on our vehicles, but I was just curious about other states.

it varies from state to state and county to county. in NY there are 2 main areas--NYMA aroung the city and the rest of the state. in NYMA it's an OBD plug in from 96+, a dyno/tailpipe check from 20yrs old to model yr 1996, and an idle test from 21-25yrs old. after 25 they don't care
in the rest of the state it's an OBD check for 96 and newer, an emissions control devices check (just that they're physically present, not for functionality) from 95 to 25yrs old and they don't care after that.
they're always changing things so that may not be up to date, but it's correct as of 2yrs ago. (when i stopped inspecting)

Up here in Maine they dont care either,more interested in dual exhaust,chrome rims and window tint than sniffer test
Here you can get away with a lot of stuff if you don't piss off the cops. I have had illegally dark window tint on my cars and never got hassled. I am talking 5% on the back windows and 20% on the front. It was so dark I had a hard time seeing out at night! They generally leave you alone here if you are not a ricer.
The only good thing Jesse Ventura did for the state of MN (in my opinion) is getting rid of emmission testing back in '98.
I do my own tint jobs-it's cheaper that way. Plus, the car in question was the Uber Shitbox, my multicolored 1995 Sentra. It warranted $30 worth of Wal Mart tint, but not a pro job. I think it had 5 different colors on the body at one point, plus a stereo made up of leftovers from friend's cars (that actually sounded good!), wheels from a variety of different junkyard Sentras (whatever has a good tire that week), and a chrome exhaust tip I found in the gutter on the side of the road. I destroyed my knee in the accident that destroyed that car tho... 😢
Agree i do my own (and everyone elses)tint.around here a "pro" job cost about 150-175 depending how dark with a sticker..fk that i can do the same job for bout $25...
For my Cutlass, I am trying something new: precut tint off Ebay. It's about the same money, but I don't like the tendency of the Wal Mart stuff to turn purple in a year or two down here. I'm hoping this stuff will last longer.
