i want to swap my engine but i wanted to know if there was a big different between a 305 and a 350 i have a 1987 cutless supreme i just want my car to sound nice and be a lil faster is there anything i can do to my 305 before i spend hella money swaping my engine

a chevy 350 is quite an upgrade from a chevy 305, for very little money.
You have the option of upgrading your 305, but that is like spraying febreez on crap... could work a little, but not worth it.

chevy 350s are EXTREMELY common, and you should be able to find a running one under $500. And even a rebuilt or mild performance one for around $1000.

Swapping engines is not much harder than upgrading parts on your 305, so why not go for it?

That being said... there are small things you can do to wake up your 305. Forexample, if you have a 2 barrel carburator, you can swap it out for a 4 barrel. Factory quadra-jet 4bbl carbs are great, and even competative with some high-end performance carbs.

There are many small tweeks you can perform to gain that extra bit of power...

can you add some pictures? People will be able to give advice paced on your current setup.

Are you sure it is a Chevy 305 and not an Olds 307?

sh*t !!! sorry lol i was typin as you guys where plese disregurd my post lol

the last year for the 307 was 85 iirc the last few years of the rwd where sbc 305
and no theres very little difference in those motors
if you get a 350 complete carb to oil pan just yank the 305 and drop in the 350 its a direct bolt-in
now if you just get a long block ( complete engine with out dist intake oilpan) you got to watch a few things
have to make sure that the 4 center intake blots are the same as your intake (vortech heads have 4 bolts that are on a different angle than the rest) and make sure its got a fuel pump rod

there are suttle differences in both engines...

They both have rear mounted distributers, both have 2 exhaust ports together in the middle. And both look generally like a v8  ha ha

An olds 307 will have a long spout sticking up in front, for your oil fill. And it has it's spark plugs above the exhaust manifold. It also will likely have valve covers with 10 bolts. And look for a little hose or pipe from the intake to the water pump right ontop.

A chevy 305 will have only 4 bolts around it's valve covers. And if it has centerbolt valve covers, there are still only 4 bolts. The spark plugs are under the exhaust manifold. And the engine is generally small and narrow.

ok so i checked it out and i have a 307 not a 305 so should i still try and swap it with a 350

If the 350 out of the Cutlass is an Olds engine, it is a direct swap from the 307. Pretty much just swap everything from the 307 onto the 350. You will know if it is an Olds engine if it looks just like the 307 in the picture. If it is a Chevy 350, it is a little more work, but still doable and worth it.
