engine building help

Since you haven't even got an engine yet it's hard to buy parts for it :lol: . I'd look for a Vortec long block or complete takeout. Good heads, around 9.5 compression ratio, roller cam, decent rods already there. Add an HEI, Vortec intake and carb and you have a simple reliable engine. You could upgrade the cam for a little more kick - just don't get greedy. Stock Vortec heads can only handle about .420" lift (some sources say as much as .480"). Guide cutters are available through places like Summit for around $65.

You should be able to pick up a running 5.7 vortec for under a 1k. The rest of the stuff he mentioned is well under another thousand.

Good, used, running complete Vortec 350....... $1000
New Vortec intake manifold.........................$150
New Holley or Edelbrock carb........................$300
New complete HEI dist...............................$200

Guide cutter, intake gaskets, misc.................$100

let me know how this goes bro i been looking all day for a vortec engine to put in the monte i found a dude with a small block vortec engine from a 99 suburban just no heads idk if it will bolt up in the monte tho anyways he wants $300 bucks for it im debating if i want to get it

The heads are what makes the Vortec. Other than that it really isn't too different than any 350 from 88 and up. I'd pass on that deal.

300 is too much for a shortblock core and that is exactly what it is without hearing it run (no heads so you cant) or taking it down for inspection. If he has the roller valvetrain with it I would offer 125. Then hope it isn't in need of serious work.

i very much agree bro he said it was for a project of his he just went another route i was thinking of offering him 200 bucks he said he pulled it out running all bearing are fine he said we can pull the pan off but idk
