Engine kicks backwards during startup

So, my engine sometimes like to kickbackwards during startup. Really hard on (i imagine) practicly everything.

sounds like the timing is too far advanced.

8 degrees BTDC with the vacuume advanced disconnected and hose plugged. Should I turn the distributor more clockwise? Should i go as high as 14?

what kind of engine is it? any mods? did this just start happening or has it been going on for awhile?
i'd double check the ignition wires then change the timing to 4* BTDC.
i've only seen kickback happen with too much timing or crossed plug wires.
