i have just a few questions before i order the right or wrong parts this week end when i go home for the week end concerning the rebuild of my 307.

1) Are the head bolts Torque to Yield or standard head bolts?
2) I'm going to replace the lifters, push rods, and valve springs; do i need to buy the new valves or can i get away with just cleaning them if there not warped or damaged.
3) And should i replace the camshaft as well?

Depending how everything looks when i inspect the engine during tear-down, i may have more questions if i should rebuild the bottom end. unless that should be done when i redo the top-end...(don't know cause I've never gone this far into a engine)

Put it in the corner and find an Olds 350. Even a 77-80 350 will out perform that swirlporturd in your 87 442. Olds went backwards in 85 with that design. The lousy 8 to 1 compression, tiny ports and awful exhaust made it a joke.

Why are you redoing the top end, to replace the lifters? Are you getting the heads checked out?

Might as well throw an RV cam in it while its apart. How is your oil pressure when the engine is warmed up? If its in the lower ranges go ahead and take the bottom end to the machine shop and get the crank checked out and see about replacing the bearings. Doesn't cost much more for a set of bearings and having the crank turned.

I think it would be good for you to take apart the 307, clean all the parts, and put it back together without using new parts, not to make it run but to get some practice and become familiar with the engine and how things fit together. Taking pictures as you go is also a great help. You know that top notch race teams practice all the time, it can only help>

There is no way we could tell you what needs done without looking at it. That being said I agree Shanghaismith on the part about using it as practice while you try to find an engine worth that work like a 350, 403, or 455.

the engine started bending push-rods left and right, so i'm just trying to fix everything.

this motor is practice for me. I cant really say that i have rebuilt any engines. but i have torn engines apart a hand full of times now at Wyotech and put them back together... they still run on the stand. They have all been pieces of crap Honda motors though 🙁

I just wanted to know if the head bolts were torque to yield before i start tearing in to the engine to inspect everything and then find out i can't put it back together properly. My dad snapped a couple push-rods inside, so i got the take the engine apart to get them out.

the rebuilt 307 is very interesting but i couldn't afford to come get it or have it ship to me at the moment on my budget.

I don't think they knew what "torque to yield" was in the 80s. I think if they look good, you can reuse them, but I would use new ones from autozone/advance(really don't need ARP for your application). They probably only cost $40 or so.

thank you, i only asked because i have found 80's cars that had torque to yield bolts.(they were all typically foreign cars though)
