Hello. I own a 1979 Monte with the factory moonroof. The moonroof panel is rusted and the seal is bad. I am have if a head time finding a moonroof panel replacement and motor. Would even consider replacing it with a sunroof (astroroof). Any ideas where I could find either of these?

Daniel, there's a lot of guys on here with a crazy amount of knowledge. One that might help you with the roof stuff is Rktpwrd, he is doing an extremely detailed build of a couple of Cutlasses. One of them (Project Olds Cool) has the solid panel Astroroof. Check back in daily, you will get updates.
You can use the search box in the upper right corner, then sift through the results, but be forewarned, it can be a rabbit hole. 🙂

Thank you sir!

GBodyParts.com carries replacement AFTERMARKET AstroRoof seals, but be forewarned. They are of a higher durometer (more firm) than the original GM seals. Unfortunately, the original GM AstroRoof seal is no longer available. You might get lucky and find a NOS one on eBay, but don’t be in a rush. I have a search saved on eBay in case one ever pops up, but it’s been well over a year with nothing.

There is one member on here that has a NOS GM AstroRoof seal, but he’s not willing to part with it unfortunately. 🙁

I bought one of the aftermarket seals and tried it, but because it’s too firm, it won’t compress enough to allow the roof panel to sit flush with the roof when it’s closed. It effectively turns the AstroRoof panel into a very effective swimming pool should it rain. I ended up reusing my 40+ year old seal, and so far so good.

Good luck with attempting to salvage your AstroRoof!

Anywhere I could find the motor or the actual panel?

eBay is probably your best bet on the motor, I’m not sure if it’s being reproduced or is available new. 69hurstolds might be able to help out there.

As for the panel, you’re going to either have to repair your existing one or locate one from another car. No other options there unfortunately. I repaired and rebuilt mine, it was pretty severely rusted.

I am not sure the steel sunroof is the same as the later glass Astro Roof used on the later G bodies. That is something that should be verified first. The glass Astro Roof was available on Buick Regals and Oldsmobile Cutlass models.
