I've been searching all damn morning and can't seem to find the stall speed specs on my 1980 malibu originally with a 267 (4.4L) and a TH350 trans. Anyone know what the factory converter stall was on this car?

usually factory is like 900 - 1200 IIRC

If the car runs, start it. Put one foot on the brake and one on the gas. That is your stall RPM. A lower power engine will stall at a lower RPM than a higher power engine in front of the same converter. That's why a converter will have a range rating rather than a specific RPM. GhettoRacingKid may be right. I was thinking it was closer to 1500ish. Seems like most stock replacement/RV converters are close to 1700-2100.

That would be easier to figure out if I had a tach.....But thanks for the info guys

I'll make it easy for you; factory stall in a car like yours is 'low' and not good for performance! Whatever it's actual stall really is, I can tell you for sure it's under 2000.

I'm still doing research on what converter to purchase, I will need about 2500 stall for my cam. Any recommendations keeping a very modest budget in mind?

I know a couple of guys that are running a summit converter, and They seem to like it. There cars are not wild, 300-400hp max. They also run in the $250.00 range.

I've had good luck with Hughes. Nothing fancy but reliable and priced right.

PTC Converters. Talk to Dusty Bradford. Heard nothing but good things from them and they're priced well. If I ever need a new converter, that's where I'm going ( but there are plenty of other high quality brands out there ). Cheapo converters like TCI, B&M, and a slew of no-name generics are a waste of money. Don't skimp on a converter just to save a few bucks or you will kick yourself in the a$$ later.
