Getting a 1981 regal this weekend but have a few questions. Its in the middle of a c5 brake conversion and the guy is giving me a 8.5" rear end with the car. It has a 700r4 in it for the parking gear and I would like to keep it just wondering what needs to be done to put the 8.5 in the car with the 700r4. It has a 5.3 out of a truck in it so does the 700r4 bolt directly to it with no adapter plate?? Also if i remember correctly the 700r4 is an electronic overdrive and lock up so I can just wire those to a switch and use a ratchet shift correct?? Also curious to what wheels will clear the c5 brakes? I know this isn't driveline related but the gauges still need to be hooked up so any info on that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance for any information.

To go from a 7.5" rear to a 8.5" rear, driveshaft needs shortened 1" that's it. 700R4 is non-electronic, 4L60E is electronic. 700R4 would only require 12 volt activation for the lock-up of the converter clutch.

Some 700R4 are already set up for mechanical speedometers. If not you can go t a pull a apart and get the parts needed to change it over.

If you're talking about an engine swap, the driveshaft will most likely need to be a custom length. The rear end can be made to work, but you might have control arm issues - spacing on the bottoms and angle at the tops

bolt pattern on wheels different?

I think user 'jbreu" might know some

As it sits right now the engine runs, the transmission is in and the mounted up and hooked up and has a driveshaft going to the 7.5. The car came with an 8.5 out of an el camino which I know is a 1" wider and the bolt pattern is the same. The car is also still an A-body

The entire drivetrain is still in another car?

The "ears" on the top of the differential for the control arms are different on an A body than on a G body

No thats the drivetrain in the regal right now. Its a 5.3L out of a truck with a 700r4 behind it and it came with a 1972 el camino 8.5. According to the previous owner the regal is still an A-body
