I'm in the process of gathering the final parts to do the complete rebuild on my 350 and the rest of the drivetrain. I hope to god I don't snap another driveshaft after this. Basically I'm looking for anyone's last minute two cents on the complete drivetrain I'm building. My main concern being whether I will have too little carb for the engine. Here is a list of the specs of each part of the drivetrain:

Engine
- 350 standard bore
- 882 heads fully built with 2.02/1.60 valves, lunati springs, etc.
- Speed Pro hypereutectic flat-top pistons (4 cc valve reliefs)
- Lunati 60103 cam (.489/.504 lift)
- Compression at 9.2 to 1 approx.
- Edelbrock performer intake
- Edelbrock 600 with electric choke
- 1.5 stamped steel rockers with HD pushrods
- Full length headers, 2.5in. exhaust, Flowmaster 40's
- Milodon Z28 Oil pump (high pressure/standard volume)

Transmission
- 1985 700r4 transmission
- 2300-2500 Dacco Pro-Street converter
- “Beast” Sunshell
- Complete HD rebuild kit
- 13 vane pump
- Corvette Servo
- .500 boost valves
- New hard parts/ reused planetaries

Rear End
- 1986 Monte Carlo SS Rear End
- 7.625 3.73 Yukon gears
- Auburn posi
- Fully rebuilt

Just looking for opinions on this setup and any flaws you can see. I have a full set of 1.6 stamped steel rockers I could play with as far as giving more exhaust lift to help scavenge out of the iron heads I'm using. As for the carb, I have a 750 Barry grant and a 750 Carter AFB if anyone feels that my current edelbrock 600 won't handle the job. Thanks for any input guys.

do you already have the 882s? jw why you arent using vortecs. Cuz i have a set of 882s and everyone i know told me not to use them, but if they are good ill put some money into em

hey Pat,
pretty good setup...

I can't speak for the heads, cuz I don't know much about them. But I do think the 600cfm carb will be too small... You can probably experiment once it's all together, but I think a 700 or 750 will work better for your combo. Just be carefull on the jetting.

... also... I would not recommend using 1.6 rockers. Turns out, the previous owner had used them on my motor before I got it. He told me that everyone told him it was a great idea, so he tried it out. It worked great for a little while, but they eventually let go, broke springs, destroyed some valves, and basically wrecked a good set of heads. They are a good, cheap way to get extra lift, but it's not a long term solution... So, be careful, use with causion.

well the 882s have 76 cc chambers but if he is still getting 9.2 to 1 sounds like its gonna work well. just wondering how they flow compared to a vortec head

The 882 heads are basically smog heads. There are many myths that these heads are proned to cracking which is NOT true. There were three sets of heads in the mid to late 70's and the 882's were the best out of the set. I forgot the number of the heads that are actually thin cast that crack. Mine do have a slight port job on them so I'm sure they'll flow as good as vortecs.

As for flow numbers, the 882's flow around 160-165cc, compared to the vortecs which flow 170cc. IMO the hassle of vortecs aren't worth it as the only time you will truely notice a minimal difference in flow is at the strip. At the same time, you can't use a regular intake on vortec heads and they have to be specially machined to handle more lift.

Then with the carb, I'll have to see when it comes time to break in the motor. The barry grant carb needs to be rebuilt and i'm sure the carter afb could use the same. They are both 750 cfm carbs, and I have no experience when it comes to swapping jets or anything on a carb.

you and me both... lol... but i'm gonna give it a shot this winter!

pat....that looks like a nice set up....the only thing I would change is the oil pump, I go with a BB pump M77 and by the book it pumps 15% more volume and I get 50 lbs pressure all day long with 25 at idle. What are you going to use for an oil pan?. I have a 7 quart Moroso and I have to drop the pan to install a windage tray cause the oil gets frothed up and the pressure started to drop when I get into it. I run a quart low which for now solves that problem. I didn't have that problem with a stock pan on it.

I'm using a 5 quart chrome pan, stock looking basically. After all the research I did, milodon uses a thicker casting that is identical to the older melling castings. At the same time, I've heard good things about the Z28 302 pumps. I figured that 15% more oil flow would be a little overkill for what I'm doing.

the M77 is the old casting thichness...it was the M55 that they cheaped out on the casting

That's not what they flow, that is the runner size. And as I posted on another thread stay away from the 1.6 ratio rockers on the XE/Voodoo cams. It makes the ramps too aggressive. You might make more peak power with a bigger carb but it prolly won't be much. Plus the smaller carb will be more responsive.
