406 Small Block Chevy out of a 1971 chevy caprice fully rebuilt, bored .030 over, 9.8:1 comp flat top pistons, double roller chain, roller rockers. EST.415-430 hp at the crank. It was built to be rode hard and put away wet. Will be mated to a 700r4 transmission. Going in my 1987 Olds Cutlass Supreme replacing the 307 and 2004r. Any ideas or suggestions what to do next

Re: Finally got pics of my 406 SBC

lookin sweet! Is that a Performer RPM intake? Or a RPM Highrise non-airgap?
... what kinda heads did you use? Or stock ones ported?

I think with a built 406, you'll wanna build the 700r4 as well. Get a modest shift kit in there, and a stall.
... speaking of stalls, what kinda cam did you use?

Re: Finally got pics of my 406 SBC

Its just an Edebrock performer, the heads are stock heads just been ported and polished. The 700r4 has been completely overhauled with a mild shift kit in it. The cam is http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-1102/. The engine was originally built for a mud drag truck and had double hump planed heads on it running 14:1 compression but seeing how i plan to drive this vehicle as much as possible i went back to factory heads so i could run pump gas. I went with that cam so i wouldnt have to run a vacuum canister since my brakes are vacuum controlled and also leave the stock 1600 stall converter in the transmission. The weak point on my car is gonna be the rear end. I'm leaving the stock 7.5 10 bolt dog leg in it until i explode it. but since im going more for a sleeper look im leaving the factory 6" wide rubber out back so the rear should hold for a while.

Re: Finally got pics of my 406 SBC

yeah, that sounds like a good plan.
... rearends break when you run slicks... it's always good to have some tire slip in that situation.

What to do next. LET er Eat.

Will be putting pics up soon of the motor in signature very soon.

Re: Finally got pics of my 406 SBC

About the only thing left to do is to sell that SBC to a Monte owner and build a 403 or 455 Olds for your Cutlass.

While I am serious (thinking olds motors for olds cars), I have done this exact build back in '94 on an '81 and it was a great combo. I miss her, may she RIP.

Well as nice as that would be the entire combo of motor and transmission plus having two factory trained GM techs to make it fit and make it run only cost me $2000 thats the reason i went the way i did. I've never been much of a purist every car i have ever owned or built has always served the purpose of driving them and driving them hard and its cheap to run chevy stuff thats why so many people out there are doing it. If the car was a 442 or a hurst it would definately stay all oldsmobile but just like my back window is gonna read. Oldsmobile makes it... Chevy shakes it!!!

Re: Finally got pics of my 406 SBC

I got the same motor in my 88 SS, my recommendation would be to go with a ford 9' unless you can find a 12 bolt somewhere. That 700 may not make it, even with a shift kit in it. I would also recommend a rev limiter, those are high torque, at low rpm motors!!!! What kind of headers are you running??? I went with schoenfeld, we had to make some "modifications" but they fit alright!!! Good luck with the rest of the build!!!!

Re: Finally got pics of my 406 SBC

I like the idea you have here, what carb are you considering? Exhaust plans?

One idea is to keep going for the low end torque/throttle response and have tons of low end fun with that 700. Maybe exhaust manifolds and a 600-650 cfm 4bbl with around 3.50-3.73 rear gear and a notched frame with some fat grippy tires. The sleeper look is cool but doesn't work so well unless its an all top end motor. Sounds like fun to me....(personally I'd go with a full manual valve body and a beefed up 700). Shift kit works as well good to see your stall isn't outrageous with the firmer shifts
