Those were on the pre '73 air cleaners. Are you talking about the vaper filter thats on the outer radius of the air cleaner body?

The 80's dual snorkels had them.
I don't think they were "removable" without doing permanent damage to then.

It's the activated carbon filter inside the air cleaner housing. Usually glued in with GM's equivalent of epoxy. Tough as hell to get out without destroying something if you manhandle it. But you can get them out by working it.

It's not absolutely needed, but they put it in. I've seen several cars running around without them.

These were found in the factory Olds dual snorkel air cleaners in HO's and 442's.

You're most likely not going to find one separately. They were not meant to be removed but can be with careful prying.

Totally cool you wanna restore a Hurst Olds but installing one of these ( if you could ever find one ) is perhaps a bit much. If you insist on running one, you're probably going to need to find a complete dual snorkel air cleaner.

P.S. They're not flame arrestors. They're filled with charcoal to filter out fuel smell. Completely unneeded. Just another restriction in making horsepower...

Early 1970,s GM cars had those cleaners , they had a filter inside the air cleaner. About 3/4 x 2" filter . I believe they attached to a 2nd pcv valve or something like it and were usually oil soaked. Your best bet as previously mentioned would be to find another complete breather.
