On my morning off i was wandering craigslist. There is a running 1975 350 for $150 runs rough when cold and smokes a little until its warm. If i bought that motor and put new rings in it. Took the stroker crank out of my 305 along with the cam and ported 305 heads and put it all on the 350 would i see a power difference between the two? In my head it seems like i would see a difference because of the already higher amount of cubes. But im not too sure. Any input would be great. Thanks!

Putting a stroker crank into anything requires a different piston or different connecting rod. Just putting in a stroker crank can't be done or the piston will set clear out of the block. So if you have a crank with a 3.75" stroke like a 400 SBC, and have the main journals cut down to fit a 350. Then use 400 rods which are 5.565" long, you could use regular compression height 350 pistons. Either that or with a 3.75" stroke crank using the 350 rods(which are 5.7" long stock) you have to get a piston with a 1.425"-1.433" compression height to fit a production height block.

So what kind of "stroker crank" are we talking about? 3.625", 3.75", 3.875", etc.? Knowing this will help get you in the right direction.

For the life of me i cant remember. The machine shop that checked it over told me and i cant remember what he said. it was like eary June when he told me..

For the price you can get stroker cranks I wouldnt waste my time with the crank from the 305. I would sell that engine whole for $300, and buy a vortec 350 or a regular 350 then save up for some decent vortec heads. You can buy an assembled set of Patriot Vortecs for about $800. Then maybe throw in a common 383 stroker crank, nice roller cam setup, and enjoy it!

What we were thinking about doing was taking the engine apart. Getting new rings and bearings all around. Getting the crank checked out. Then putting my ported 305 heads, weiand intake and my holley 600 on it with the longtube headers and i feel we would have a pretty nice motor for a street/strip car. Maybe even get some flat tops if we can find some good ones for a little cheap

Whats the casting of the 305 heads? I think you're wasting your time trying to use 305 heads on a 350. You most likely will gain compression but I cant imagine them flowing anywhere near a vortec casting especially in the higher RPMs. I had heads from an early 80s 305 on my 350 and it really wasnt impressive. It had a mild cam as well and still got smoked by my buddies 3.9 Dakota  Im really curious about that crank though, keep us posted.

The last 3 of the casting number is 416

Those are small chambered heads I believe in the 56-58cc range and 1.84-1.5 valves. A 350 will run out of breath with those pretty quick. Dont waste your time.
