Fuel line Issues?

I'm working on getting a new engine sbc 355 running. I heard the engine run before I bought it and it was good. I put my holley 4160 4bbl on it ran a new fuel line. Dbl checked for tdc and all spark plug wires are good and connected correctly. When I go to start it it runs erratically -ok for a couple second - then it will slow down and die. If I restart it and try to keep it running using the gas pedal it will still do the same thing except it will backfire through the carb before it dies.

Can this be caused by to many bends in a fuel line or a fuel filter issue? When I say bends I mean 90 degree bends using preformed -6an fittings not accidental kinks in a metal line per se.
 
Was the 4160 put into service as is or did you make adjustments to it? There might be a need to tune it to the motor instead of looking at the fuel lines.

It was put in as is. It came off running engine but had to sit on shelf for about 90 days before I placed it on this new engine. I have thought of this as the problem maybe a gasket dried out or something like that. I am not yet familiar with rebuilding carbs nor with the possible errors when routingf fuel line. The engine doesn't run long enough to do any tuning to it while the engine is running and I don't have the experience to be able to tell something is wrong just by looking.

I'd suggest starting with the simple adjustments & a new carb tointacke gasket along with reading up on the 4160. There could also be issues with timing & vacuum lines.

I have checked my timing and vacuum. What is a tointacke gasket?
 
Have you pulled the line off the inlet to the carb, pushed on a hose that fits snug and run it in to a bucket and see if you're getting a good amount of fuel when cranking?

Maybe the fuel pump, (is it mechanical on engine?) is bad or week? If you have a vacuum/fuel pressure gauge you can check that as well to be sure pump is ok.


How's the rest of the fuel system on the supply side of fuel pump? If you have any concerns with it, put a hose from the pump supply inlet into a gas can as a test as well.

If it works fine off the gas can, you gotta check lines, and filter, tank etc.
