So before I get too far with this I just want to say I'm all ready feeling pretty dumb asking about something as trivial as installing the fuel tank but her it goes.

So long story short I cant make this new fuel tank fit. Its been 6 or so years since the original one was removed from the car and thrown out so unfortunately I can't compare this new one to the original to see if they are the same. The other downer to this is that I didn't remove the original tank.

Some questions I have are;
-should there be some rubber blocks or anything that sit between the tank and the underside of the car? I ask this because the the wire connection for the sending unit is way to close to the underside of the car...its actually hitting and blocking the tank from moving up higher.
-is there a difference between standard carbureted tanks and the tanks that were used for the GN and T-Type fuel injected cars. I may have ordered the tank for injected regal, again that was 5 years ago...and yes its taken me this long to get around to installing it!

That's all I have for now. I appreciate any help.

I would say there is a definate difference between carb and non carb tanks...reason is the non carb tanks have pumps inside them. Sounds like you have the wrong tank. Might want to go to AZ or Advance and see if you can find one for a carb car. You should be able to sell the tank you have without much problem.

Did you re-install the 1" spacers in the bolts closest to the rear seat? They slide over the bolt before you install.
That is why your tank is probably setting hi. Both tanks are dimensionally the same. A Fuel injected tank will have rubber isolators on the tank hanger area. The carb will not.
The FI tank should be baffled also. It would not matter which one you use in a carb set up but would in a EFI set up.

The thin foam rubber isolaters that go the length of the tank straps between the tank & the strap might be hard to find but you probably can cut some from some foam that you could get from Home Depot etc. Lol or Gbodyparts could probably hook you up with the correct pieces.

I didn't have any spacers on mine and it fit ok. The tank sits on two channels on that come down from the trunk pan that allows the pick up to sit in the cavity in between. At least that's how it is on my GP

I'm waiting for a customer to show up this morning. We are installing a double pumper set up from Racetronix & a new tank. I'll take my camera back with me & post later on what the spacers look like. The tank can be installed with out the spacers. As your tightening up it will break the clips that the bolts screw into. Others just snug up as hi as possible. I have seen them come in here like that with Ty-wraps on one side.
If you snug the tank tight to the trunk pan to me that would just cause wear metal to metal. I have dropped down low mileage cars & we see rust developing under the straps from metal to metal wear. They should of put rubber in all the tanks to prevent this.
I'll take a few pics this morning. Efi tanks have the rubber due to the pump vibration in the tank. I know GP's had efi tanks as well. We sold those to customers when the GN tanks went discontinued from GM back in 2001.
The spacers change the tank from fitting ok to fitting well. dogshit we do sell the new rubber isolators. If your in a bind & near a yard they are available on a Gbody that was EFI. They are hooked together with velcro. When installing any new tank you should put something between the straps. When removing the old tank you will see where it has prematurely rusted. Even if you cut up an inner tube it would give some protection.

I'd like to see those spacers. My new tank was installed by "professionals" about 4 years ago. I have had the tank off a few times and there is no spacers so if they are missing I'll install them this winter.....

PontiacGP I went out & checked 4 of my GP's. 2 being a 2+2 none of those had the spacers so you should be good. I do not have any EFI Gp's here to check. So your good, & I'm dirty again after getting cleaned up from installing that double pumper.
I do know the The Buicks do have these. He posted in the Buick Sections so I think this may be what the problem is on his tank. Hopefully this post will help some others in the future.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Those spacers on the bolts might be what i'm missing. I think i have seen something like that in one of my magical bolt bins that got started years ago when the car got taken apart. If i cant find em ill just cut a piece of electrical conduit about an inch long and see how she fits.

Thanks again everyone, and I'm sure you'll hear from me again in the near future as i try and piece this wreck back together!
