Gas Gage

My 87 El Camino has the standard gage package. The gas gage stopped working shortly after I bought the car 4 years ago. It always registers on Full. Tonight I fired it up after sitting for the past 4 weeks, the gage worked! For a while. Any idea what is wrong? The other dash indicators, "gages", on the dash work.

clean the ground connection for the gas tank. The ground coming from the sender is grounded on the braket for the left side strap in the back. If that doesn't cure the problem get a on reader and check the reading using the + wire from the sender, the reading should be within 0-90 with 0 being empty
