well i just found out last week that my gas gauge works but the car wont pump gas after 1/2 tank. i was gonna move my car back into the driveway and the car wouldnt start. i pulled the fuel line off and turned on the car and no gas came out. i have an electronic fuel pump that starts when the ignition is on so it should pump gas even with out turning over the engine. so what im thinkin is the sock got clogged half waydown and acts like a dam or the sending unit has a hole rusted in it. i saw in CHP mag that a guy pulled the lines in the tank and replace them with bigger pipe he bend himself. i conserned about removing the gastank because its a 78 and its an IL car. i dont wanna break the tank strap bolts, but if i do, how do i replace them? any suggestions on how i should go about this?

spray the bolts with penetrating fluid LOOOOOOOOOOOONG before you try and remove them. another thing that helps if you can get to the nut is to heat it with a MAPP gas hand torch. working then bolt back and forth can also help. i think i've only had 1 bolt break on me, i've had a lot strip though.

if it does break they make clips with the nut built in. (which is probably what the factory used). you slip that onto the frame and you're good.

well i fount a sending unit from dixiemontecarlo.com and they want 200 some bucks for it. so i went to autozone and got one from a 78 malibu for 50 some bucks. now just to wait till the weather gets better and i get some more money together.

well this week i got alot done with the fuel situation. i must have dropped the tank 6 or 7 times fiddlin with the new sending unit. we'd drain the tank and drop it and poke and prod and finally i found the culpret - it was a dried out rubber hose from the vent side. so i replaced all the rubber hoses, like 6 of them and took apart the electric fuel pump and cleaned it all the way down to the motor. so then the sending unit wasnt long enough so i uesd some extra hose i had left and cut the sending unit and added some rubber hose to make it longer. well the car car now starts up without a problem but it still runs bad. i need to get the timing looked at-but thats a different story for a later date. the most suprising thing was that the bolts were all very east to undo and none broke, just a lil spritz with some PB Blaster and they gave me no trouble at all. heres some pics:
