If they are already RWD, it would probably be pretty simple to replace the drivetrain in the Cadillac  The subframe construction is probably more durable and light weight, compared to a GBody full frame :|

Yep, modified x-body would be correct. I've always liked the 76-79 Sevilles too. From what I recall, I don't think you could get them without a vinyl top until '78. I also recall reading that '76 was the only year with a 5x4.75 bolt pattern and the 77-79's had 5x5 (haven't confirmed it though). If you check the NADA values, the '76 seems to be worth a lot more than the other years for some reason, which was also the only year that had the egg-crate grill. I've known people in the past that owned these and some were plagued with electrical problems.

I believe they had rear leaf springs and rear disc as well. Besides the Elegante versions, they made a Gucci Edition too. I'd like to do an LS or Olds 455 swap into one of them. IIRC, they also came with TH400's, which would make a 200-4R swap a piece of cake.

I think they refer to those as the bustle-backs. I think the easiest ones to do a swap with would have been the '80-'81 models since they had 368's or find a Olds diesel version. On another note, the thing that is cool about them is that they share platforms with the Riv, Toro and Eldo. I haven't tried anything with them yet, but that 307 set-up is plentiful if someone wanted to ditch the HT4100 and shove a larger displacement Olds engine back in. The '82+up would have a TH325-4L....which is an OD trans too. The only downside is that the '80+up K-platform is FWD. But so were earlier Toro's and Eldos with 455's, 472's & 500's.

Too many ideas, not enough cash!

I worked at Fisher Body back then.

When the 1979 Seville came out, its not-so-flattering nickname was "The hunchback of Clark Street".

Cadillac Motor Division headquarters was located on...you guessed it...Clark Street.

Re: g body hot rod cadillac!!??

I worked a a Caddy dealer for 22 years ,We called the 76-78 Seville's The $hit Box Seville. Most of them caught fire from the high pressure Bosch fuel injection. The Diesel ones were terrible. The 79 was an ugly SOB but the little old ladies loved them. We could not keep them in stock.

Naturally I had different thoughts when I saw the title of the thread. I thought Gbody with a hot rod Cadillac motor in it. You can see in my signature and pics that I put a 500 Cadillac in a gbody. I know of a couple 80s rwd Cadillacs converted to the 472/500. The 80/81 was a drop in and the diesels don't have inspections so naturally both those were candidates.

The first year or two had the 4.75" bolt pattern and switched to 5/5 as mentioned. They were good cars, with a problem plaugued early Bosch efi system. That was also available on all other Caddy's as well, both 472 and 500. From '77 up, the efi worked much better and often fires and other problems were the result of mechanics that didn't understaND THE SYSTEM AND USED STANDARD HOSE,o-rings, ETC.... to effect fuel system repairs. I worked at a Caddy dealership at the time and we loved the cars. Biggest issue was, you could not turn the key on, then pump the gas pedal before starting like we were use to with Q-jets, if you did, it was flooded and would not start until the plugs were removed and cleaned. They drove much better than the huge full sized '75-'76 cars and actually had decent passing power, just typical poor 0-60 times of most mid seventies cars. The dealership owner, Ed, bought a low milage '77 triple black car. We replaced the 350 with a factory 403 short block, '70 350 W-31 heads, cam and intake. We used headers for an Omega and 2.5" duals. We used Trans Am springs and sway bars, as well as 3.42 rear axle, re-drilling the axle pads on the rear which was about the same width. I don't recall what if any mods were needed for those mods, but it wasn't extensive I do know. I recall the car as having a T-350 trans, but I could be wrong. When we were done, that was one bad assed Caddy, that was a great handler and a blast to drive. He kept the car long after he sold the dealership and at 92 just recently sold it and the '76 Eldo convertible he ordered new and never tagged until 1998. 8)
