Bailey, not all heads are like this. Even if they were they make brackets that overcome this.

yep, brackets.

i realize not all heads are like this. but the early true double hump heads dont ahve mounting wholes as far as I can remember, but yes I'm aware or the brackets for mount accessories but its just kind've a pain in the *ss and more money. at the same time its probly still cheaper than buying another set of heads

M.Bailey is right in the fact that the "early" double hump heads did not have the accessory holes in the end of the heads! But, the " later " double hump heads (slightly smaller humps) no only had the accessory holes, but also had the temp. sending unit hole cast into them. "186" also had a redesigned combustion chamber! This head is similarto the "291", and is identical to the "461". Casting number "492" appeared on the "186" head in early 1971. The "187" head is the same as the "186", except it came only in the 1970 corvette and came only with 2.02 valves and guide plates, and had a cc of 63.995.
The "186" had a cc of 63.305. With 1.94 valves it didn't have guide plates, and was used on the 350/300 engine.
With 2.02 valves it did have guide plates, and was used on the Camaro 350/360, and on the
350/370 Corvette.
I know this is long, but thought it might be of help at swap meets, etc.

Well, I think i'm going to stick with the crate engine as it is, and use the 462 heads for another project. added a performer EPS intake to the long block, and i have an edelbrock 1406 carb to add also. I've got a set of Hooker shorty headers, New GMPP dist, New starter, Flex plate, Harmonic damper, and an Edelbrock Elite dress-up kit, new milodon water pump. The more i think about this being a reliable yet fun daily driver, The more I'm pleased with going this route. As for mufflers, I'm looking at Thrush Welded, but i've gotta chill with/ spending for a while, I'm still just trying to stockpile parts as i go. I definitely understand about re-using old hoses, clamps, etc, been down that road before!
