Hey everyone,

Some of you know my dad purchased an '87 GN two years ago and we just got it on the road in August of '12. Since then I have been driving it too school and work every day, but have only put about 500 miles on it.

-We are not too sure about what has been done to the car since the previous owner was not too sure either-

Previous Problem:

Scanmaster throwing code 45 for rich exhaust. Car was running 8lbs of boost and getting 10mpg (I barely touch the pedal)

Check engine light has been coming on during cold starts but goes away next restart.

Current Problem: (began this morning)

Got in the car this morning, started it and it was running like it was misfiring as soon as the check engine light came on. It was atleast 45 degrees out this morning where i live.

The engine does not accelerate in park when you give it gas.

Black smoke comming from exhaust when you rev it.

Codes-What they mean-the Causes just not sure where to start with them. Also the scanmaster was not giving me all of the readings, like not RMP and others in video.

I know it is probably helpful to know what chip is in the car, but im not too sure if it is the stock one or not. The computer is one that has been remanufactured.

My dad and I are not too familiar with this engine as it is our first TB so any pics or diagrams of the cam sensor, air temp sensor...What is the Cal-Pak?

I have already posted this on Turbobuick.com im just looking for all of the help I can get.

Any help or advise would be great. This is my daily driver and it is going to be out of commission until I can get it fixed.

Thank You!

-Mike

MAF would be the first thing I would check. TB board should provide good help.

Just started the car up with the MAF unplugged and it ran like it normally does. It was running really rich though. Is that normal when running with the MAF unplugged? Also, all the codes on the scanmaster went away, but now it is giving code 34 which i am assuming is the MAF code?

-Mike

Its might be the MAF look out for rebuilt oned they don't always work right. It also could be the coil pack is bad. I can tell you if you had a rich code the plugs are wiped out use a autolite 25 gap a tight 35-32 if you are running stock theromstat.
I f you run a 160 you can use a 24 autolite in the summer. Buy a chip from TURBO TWEEK he makes the best his name is Eric Marschall he is on the Turbo Buick.Com board

Check for vacuum leaks
exspecially around map sensor
if you know someone w/gn use known good parts to trouble shoot
us ac delco parts they are a little bit more but were made for buicks
you can get way out of wack in a hurry
put back anything you have changed
most of all get real familiar w/car peter hoffman book real good for this also buick shop manual 200.00 bucks
good luck i am finishing ls416 88 turbo in mine next couple weeks gave up on old technology
suggest FAST EFI casper wiring harness adaptor 2500.00 dump ecm

Looking at the photo you have an aftermarket turbo on it.

Have you replaced the maf?

We cleaned the maf and the car has been running great since then. Scan master shows no error codes.

The turbo says AiResearch M24 on it. I thought I read somewhere that this is the stock turbo.
