Needle scaler on engine block

Yes, perfectly safe and works great. See my before, during and after pics of the engine I just finished building.

Sounds like poor man's shotpeening to me. Can;t see how it would be any worse than bouncing BBs off the block.
we used it in the shipyard to knock paint off the inside hull. 'course, that was several inches thick HY100 steel
 
Looks like a block that came out of a snow plow truck. Push it salt it and let it sit. Did several of those blocks in the day, had the small one for HF and did the job.
