How hard is it to put a GN gear in GM xbody? I have a chance to buy a 1974 GTO, and I have a GN rear and was wondering if it bolt in without to many mods?

The xbody uses leaf springs and the gn used coil springs and control arms. There may be a width difference also. 2nd gen fbody rears use leaf springs, but are wider.

If I'm not mistaken, some X-body cars came with an 8.5 rear. My neighbor had a '77 Nova that had an 8.5 rear in it. If that's the case, you can use the posi unit and gears out of the GN rear, or find out what the '74 GTO is equipped with. If it already has an 8.5 with decent gears, sell the GN rear end.

Correct, the later (75 and newer) x-bodys used the 8.5 rear, but those are too wide for the 74. An original 74 GTO should be a 8.5 with 3.08 gears, unless it's been changed.
