Good deal?

New question....I found out that my friend has a 350 vortec out of a 1998 truck. He said it ran great when he took it out 2 months ago, and it has around 120,000 miles on it. How hard is it to convert to carb? Are there lots of sensors and such that need to be changed?

Should be real easy to switch over. Youll need an intake manifold for vortec heads, an alternator bracket for vortec heads, and an electric fuel pump.

Thanks. I think I'm going to buy it from him then. He wants $400, which I think is very reasonable. Do you know if there are any differences between the vortec 5.0 and the vortec 5.7? I want to make sure I don't get ripped off and be buying another 5.0 when it's not what I want.

personally i think building one yourself would be a better choice. i doubt that engine makes that much power. that intake manifold isnt all that great. the 882 cylinder heads are ok but if they have bigger valves and depending on were in the port the "mild port work" is done then they could be alright. the thing that I'm curious about is the compression ratio. if it is a 13.8 to 1 motor yea it could make that much power on those heads and intake. and since it has a full floating rod and a solid lifter cam you coukd make the assumtion thay it is a higher RPM engine. but without know so much about the engine my guess would be it only makes about 275-300hp if that. and i could be totally wrong. but the 4 bolt main block would be a good place to start on a real high performance motor 🙂

Thanks. One more question: Is that vortec engine going to be able to bolt right up to my existing transmission and bellhousing?

yes

I built my 350 up from bare block for a grand. I just don't trust another guys word or what he says about the engine. If it's not a STOCK engine and its been modified in any way, I would take it apart and double check every inch of that engine. Just because he says "its been built" doesn't mean he did it right.

And why do people dog iron heads so much? I love my 882 heads. They're even better now with the 202/160 valves. I just don't see why there is so much hate going towards them. Yes aluminum is good don't get me wrong. But the only time your really gonna see the benefit of doing a minor port job or going with full aluminum heads is on the strip doing multiple passes and going for every last tenth of a second. If your just building a street car to drive around as a hot rod, you don't need aluminum heads. I figure its just so people can say "O yeah I got aluminum heads".

I've been through this kind of thing and no matter what, I will NEVER buy an engine from and ad, online or anywhere. Either have an experienced, reputable shop build one, or buy a crate engine. I would ask to hear the engine run before purchase. Also ask for a warrantee on paper, if you do buy it.

One benefit is that aluminum heads can dissipate heat better than cast iron heads -- which comes in handy for higher compression engines. Of course an obvious benefit is weight expecially when it's a big block (makes a big difference).

Looks like a great deal to me, provided everything works together. The cam has a very high lift with short duration, so if it works with those heads and springs it would make a great engine that would sound pretty damn good too. Just my opinion, but you should verify everything would work for your application.
