Read most of that before. If you got an original Hurst or 442 and want to keep your original numbers matching motor than a 307 build can make sense from that standpoint. Actual experienced engine builders like someone who does it for a living will not tell you that you cannot build a 307 to make decent power. They will tell you that for the same or less money including a reasonable core cost you will get more HP and torque out of a 350/403 and it no more work or money when putting it back in your car.

Assuming that you are trying to build something that will get around 1 HP per cube or better ie apples to apples. To do that a 307 requires major changes in heads & compression to get their ie a full rebuild with new or substantially modified parts. Low buck mods/rebuilds/refreshes can/will generally take you to about 220HP with a 307 after that spend wisely and get a bigger Olds.

Well, most of those 307's that were built were by experienced engine builders... If you mean budget building, that was covered too. Now when you talk about "cost-efficient" hp, yea, just getting a 350 or 403 will be a better option but 70% of people who has them have still upgraded something just like you would the 307. It becomes super "cost-effective" considering if you did the motor swap to something else, you would have to buy the motor (403/350), overhaul it (new gaskets, seals, oil, etc.) and possibly changing out your exhaust. all that money you just spent buy changing motors can partially fund the 307 build. And half of the upgrades consists of factory components that you can find in the junk yard or www searching.
