i run a TCI 350 in my car as well, it was beat on its entire life....and yet no hiccup or anything! It was in a low 13s car, now it sits behind my 455, I heard bad things about TCI but i dunno they came thru on this one!

basically a numerically lower gear delivers lower acceleration on a given input, and higher top speed. numerically higher gears deliver hugher acceleration and lower top speed for the same input.
look at a 3 speed bicycle--small gear turns a large gear for hills and power(high ratio), next a larger gear turns the same endgear for flat roads and speed(low ratio) (i'm going to ignore the final overdrive gear)
if your car is a street car and you want speed acceleration and mpg, 3.23 3.42 and 3.73 will be good. maybe 3.08 with a th350.
my monte has 3.73's and 450+torque and she flies!

i have 3.73s and i hate em with a 3spd...nothing is worse than singing your motor on the freeway 3000rpms at 60 sucks!!! for a small block its ok but a big block ? forget it!

thats why i said "maybe 3.08 with a th350"

LOL its cool man! You are correct with those gears you listed, coupled with an OD you will have one fun street cruiser!! great on gas and fun to drive!

awesome. good information guys. at least there are only a few options to choose from the make things simple. what does my el camino most likely have in it stock?? (1982)

the bicycle example makes sense..a larger gear has higher top speed but harder to get off the line.

so nobody knows much about my governor problem? plastic gears ..

depends on what engine is in your car, a lot came with 2.29 2.41(3.8V6) 2.56, 2.73, 2.93(rare) 3.08 or 3.23s
