i think that the plastic gear is the speedo gear. it drives or is driven by the governor( not sure which way). the governor has springs in it. they may have fallen out. it's pretty common with the 200r4.
you can get a new gear and/or a governor recalibration kit from TCI.

awesome. good information guys. at least there are only a few options to choose from the make things simple. what does my el camino most likely have in it stock?? (1982)

the bicycle example makes sense..a larger gear has higher top speed but harder to get off the line.

so nobody knows much about my governor problem? plastic gears ..

depends on what engine is in your car, a lot came with 2.29 2.41(3.8V6) 2.56, 2.73, 2.93(rare) 3.08 or 3.23s

sorry I have a swapped 350 in it. came with a 305 though.
im willing to put money on it being a 2.56 or 2.73 rear ratio

i dont think that plastic gear is the speedo gear really, the cable attaches on the other side of the transmission if im thinking correctly.

beeterolds- im not gonna bet against you. one of many things needing an upgrade i can see.

LOL its all good man... those cars came with some really lame gears...hell the only G/A bodies that got the good gears were the performance cars...

well hopefully it will be a dramatic increase once i get around to changing it. I still cant believe the speedometer stops at 85...i mean come on...

actually its a numerically smaller gear ratio not a larger gear.
I.E. in a 3.08:1 gear the driveshaft turns 3.08 times for 1 turn of the tire. in a 4.10:1 the driveshaft turns 4.10 to 1 turn of the tire.

the easiest way to find your ratio is to put the rear in the air in neutral and turn the driveshaft. have a chalk mark on the tire and driveshaft count how many times you have to turn the driveshaft for 1 turn of the tires. just make sure that both tires are turning forward.

wait so if i go from a 2.XX gear ratio to a 3.7X wont i be making my top speed lower than stock? I also dont understand why you would want the driveshaft turning more and the tire turning less.

yes changing to a numerically larger gear (2.xto 3.xx) will lower your top speed, but increase your acceleration.
having the tires turn less than the driveshaft allows the engine to produce less torque and operate at lower rpm's. it's the same concept behind gear reduction in a transmission. 2.74:1 first gear, 1.57 second, etc.

well how much of a deduction are we talking about from a 2.74 to one of the 3.xx's. and wow now i understand gear ratios! ty! I'm learning.

this is a guess but i believe that if you divide 2.74 by 3.73=73.5% so you can take your present top speed and multiply by .735 and get your new top speed.
just found this...
http://www.catherineandken.co.uk/sti/tyres.html

it doesn't take friction or aerodynamics, or alot of other things, into account so i'd take the max speed with a grain of salt. it says i can do 252mph with a 2.74 gear  😀
